SARASOTA, Fla. — A 14-year-old Florida boy died this weekend after he was accidentally shot by his father at a gun range, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office .
William Brumby, 64, was shooting a handgun Sunday afternoon at the High Noon Gun Range in Sarasota when a shell casing struck a wall and bounced into the back of his shirt. He used his right hand, which was holding the handgun, in an attempt to remove the casing, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Brumby inadvertently pointed the gun behind him and accidentally fired, striking his 14-year-old son, Stephen Brumby. The boy was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he died.
The Sheriff’s Office said they are continuing their investigation after reviewing a video of the shooting and talking to witnesses. No charges have been filed against William Brumby.
Brumby's 24-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter were also at the range but were not injured.
