ISIS announces new leader for Boko Haram, says al-Barnawi replaces Shekau

Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, ISIS, has announced a new leader for its West African branch which is Boko Haram. According to BBC, the terrorist group announced this in the latest issue of their magazine. The magazine featured its first interview with Abu Musab al-Barnawi who replaces Abubakar Shekau.

Recall that in January 2015, al-Barnawi appeared in a video clip where he described himself as the spokesman for Boko Haram. This was before the Nigeria-based jihadist group pledged allegiance to IS.

Shekau has not made a verified appearance in any of the sects propaganda videos since August 2015.

South Sudan humanitarian situation could worsen: UN

UN says fighting, which killed hundreds and displaced more than one million, could worsen bleak humanitarian situation.

Millions of South Sudanese made homeless, hungry or both from a fresh eruption of violence are in desperate need of more assistance, the United Nation's humanitarian chief has said.
Stephen O'Brien, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said on a three-day visit to South Sudan that he feared the situation in the world's newest country - where renewed fighting in July killed more than 300 people - could worsen.
The UN says that close to five million people are hungry, and South Sudan's high inflation rate makes steep food prices unaffordable to many.
Up to 60,000 people have fled to neighbouring Uganda, the UN says. Some 1.6 million are internally displaced.
"The humanitarian situation here, as elsewhere in South Sudan, has the danger of getting worse before it can get better," O'Brien said at a camp in Aweil. "It is up to us now to partner with the people of South Sudan to have a future and to have hope."
He said that the country's transport links were challenging and that "feeder roads", which are essential to infrastructure, "aren't there".
Fighting between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to his rival, the former Vice President Riek Machar, is ongoing.
Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan, reporting from Aweil said: "There is also evidence of armed groups looting villages, murdering civilians, and forcing young men and boys to join them."
The hunger crisis is so acute, Morgan said, that some people had left their homes simply to find food.
At the camp in Aweil, Regina Mayeul, the mother of three-year-old Ayak, who weighs less than half the average weight, told Al Jazeera: "Life has become hard, there is no money for me to buy things from the market except for some greens.
"I get that and give it to her [Ayak] but she [has] started suffering from anaemia. We had to go to the bush to find food. I just want my kids to have food and something to drink but I have no job."
David Deng Deng, head of the city's health ministry, said: "Our threshold is supposed to be less than 50 percent or 50 percent, but now it's double. It's almost a 100 percent. This is an indication of the worsening conditions especially on malnutrition among children."

New Texas law allows college students to carry guns on campus

College students in Texas are now permitted to carry handguns in school. A new state law that went into effect on Monday August 1st, permits students who are at least 21 years old and have a concealed handgun license, to bring guns onto most college campuses. The controversial campus law permits the students to do so at all public colleges and universities.

While some college facilities, including sports arenas and chemical labs, are off-limits for concealed gun holders, private schools and two-year community colleges are excluded until next year.

According to proponents of the law, an armed student body might be able to prevent incidents of mass shootings before the police might arrive. Critics however fear that new measures might encourage more violence, especially in a school environment filled with depression and alcohol.

The Texas law took effect on the 50th anniversary of the clock tower massacre - one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history - in which a student gunman shot 49 people, killing 16, at the University of Texas at Austin. The shooter, Charles Whitman, a Marine-trained 25-yr-old engineering student, climbed to the 28th-floor observation deck of a campus clock tower and began firing on students and staff.

The University of Texas unsuccessfully lobbied against the law which was pushed through by Republican Gov. Gregg Abbott and a majority in the Republican-led state Legislature.

STEEL INDUSTRY: Don’t concession NIOMCO to GHSL, group urges Buhari

OLEH—A group, Concerned Delta Indigenes Forum, CDIF, has appealed to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to jettison the proposed concessioning of the Nigeria Iron Ore Mines Company, NIOMCO, Itakpe, Kogi State, to Global Steel Holdings Limited, GSHL, former operators of the Delta Steel Company, Ovwian-Aladja, Delta State. It described NIOMCO as the “nerve centre and the life wire of the DSC plant as well as the steel industry in Nigeria.
Buhari

Any decision of the Federal Government to concession NIOMCO to GSHL without the interest of the old DSC and its host communities is inimical, and insidious, to the plight of the people of the Niger Delta in particular in this administration.” Decrying the perceived neglect of DSC, the group, in a statement by its Coordinator, Ese Ogboru, alleged that GSHL devastated and “cannibalized” DSC plant beyond redemption, recalling that “In 2005, concession was given to GSHL and was consequently terminated in 2008 due to the company’s refusal to pay the Federal Government. “Also, between 2005 and 2008, GSHL could hardly produce approximately two to three million tons from Itakpe Mines.

The DSC plant, under whatever names or operator, has enormous capacity to empower more than 10, 000 persons economically and in line with the firm resolve of the current administration to provide jobs for the jobless, every effort should therefore, be harnessed towards the resuscitation of the plant.

“The Federal Government, as the grand overall authority should do everything possible to support the restart process of the plant, now underway, because expectations are very high.” The group urged the Federal Government to make adequate provisions in terms of a hitch-free regular supply of raw materials for the resuscitation of the DSC plant

Syria Aleppo siege: Fighting rages as Russian jets strike

Intense fighting has continued around the Syrian city of Aleppo, where a rebel offensive is trying to break a government siege of rebel-held areas.
Over the weekend, the rebels tried to reconnect an encircled area in the east with insurgent territory in the west.
They set off a huge tunnel bomb underneath army positions in the strategic Ramouseh district.
The army has been fighting back with the help of Russian air strikes to stop the rebels breaking through.
Around a quarter of a million civilians are living under siege in rebel-held areas since government forces cut them off last month.

"We are now overlooking the Ramousah area but Russian jets are intensifying their bombing, which is holding us back from moving quickly," a rebel commander told Reuters news agency.
Another rebel source told Reuters that about 10,000 troops, at least 95 tanks and several hundred rocket launchers had been deployed for what he described as the "great epic battle of Aleppo".
The source said scores of suicide bombers had also been prepared to drive explosive-laden military vehicles into army posts.
UK-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the rebel offensive as the largest so far, involving fighting across the divided city's main battle fronts.

'No food and daily attacks' - Aleppo resident tells BBC of fight for survival

"Basic food has completely disappeared. For families who have children, there is no milk in the markets.
"Every day we have at least 20 to 30 attacks by Russian aircraft or by the helicopters.
"There are no cars going around. Public transport has completely stopped because of the lack of fuel. People are staying inside their houses to avoid shelling."

The observatory said 50 rebel fighters and jihadists had been killed since the operation began on Sunday, as well as dozens of government soldiers.
It has been reported that barrels suspected to contain chlorine gas were dropped on the town of Saraqeb near Aleppo.
About 30 people, mostly women and children, were reported to have been affected. Chlorine gas can cause victims to become short of breath and to foam blood from the mouth.
It is not clear who was responsible.
The attack took place near to where a Russian military transport helicopter was shot down by rebels hours earlier killing all five personnel on board.
It was the deadliest single incident for Russia's military since its air campaign began last September.
The Russian government has responded to US criticism over its actions in Syria by arguing that it is "unacceptable" to demand restraint around Aleppo.

Aleppo was once Syria's commercial capital and also boasted a rich architectural and archaeological heritage.
Much of it has been destroyed or looted during more than five years of war.
Russia and Syria have announced the opening of what they called humanitarian corridors for civilians and rebels wanting to surrender but few people are reported to have used them.

'It is a shame for the Ooni Of Ife to claim Jesus is his father after all the rituals he has done'- Seun Kuti

Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti has come for the Ooni of Ife, saying its a shame the monarch said Jesus Christ is his father. At a church service in June in the US, the Ooni said he has a father and that Jesus is his father. Seun in the interview with Sahara TV, said the Ooni's statement is shameful after all the rituals he did before his ascension to the throne. He said the Ooni's statement is an insult to the throne that is older than him, his lineage and anything that he thinks he knows.

"Its just a shame. Its just like saying that the Queen of England says the Pope is her father. If she says she no longer believes in the Anglican church of England and Archbishop of Canterbury and she swears allegiance to the Pope who is a fellow christian but a catholic, she will leave that throne that day. That will be the last day she will be the Queen of England. So for the Ooni to say he is the son of Jesus is cap over face, Shame! Shame! Shame! Especially after all the rituals he has done to become king of Yoruba people. It is literal when they say to become King in Yoruba land you have to eat the king (the previous king). Yes he is the king of everybody.
British people are Muslims too, Ifa worshipers too but it doesn't mean the Queen will pander to them by going to worship with them. No, but she respects their rights to freedom and accommodation as the King, that is your duty but to go and start pandering with them is an embarrassment to a throne that is older than him, to a throne that is older than his lineage, to a thrown that is older than anything that he thinks he knows. There is another king like him, I have forgotten his name, one little young idiot that goes around saying it is the rituals that our ancestors have done that is why people are suffering so his throne is now a Christian, he is a Christian king. I mean it is just nonsense. If the Ooni can say that, I can see how one little stupid idiot that they also gave a crown too can say the same rubbish"he said

LAMATA, Japan to build $1bn Lagos urban rail

Tobi Aworinde
The Lagos State Government says it will partner the private sector, speficically Japan International Cooperation Agency, to construct a $1bn urban rail line.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said this during a seminar by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in conjunction with the Japanese firm in Lagos.
According to LAMATA, a survey titled ‘Lagos Urban Railway Development Project in the Federal Republic of Nigeria’ was conducted by both partnering firms, which was aimed at introducing the Automated Guide Transit, a type of monorail conceived as a new transportation system in the state.
The agency added that based on the study, the monorail project, to link Marina, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, would curb traffic congestion and improve the environment in Lagos.
Mobereola, who estimated the cost of the project to be executed as $1bn, said a huge percentage of the sum “would come from the private sector.”
According to the commissioner, the Gross Domestic Product in Lagos comes mainly from the Marina-Victoria Island-Ikoyi axis and that the area constitutes major attraction for business in the state.
He added that during the project, the existing structures would not be affected, “since the middle of the roads would be used for its implementation.”
However, Mobereola said the state would pay compensation where existing structures were affected.
The Acting Managing Director, LAMATA, Mr. Iyiola Adeboye, explained that the project was aimed at ensuring smooth transportation and reducing gridlock in Lagos State.
The Public Transport Director, LAMATA, Mr. Gbenga Dairo, while addressing the current condition of transportation in Lagos Island, attributed the problem to inappropriate road layout, poor traffic management, inadequate public transport and institutional obstacles.
According to the Team Leader, Urban Railway and Transport Planning, JICA, Mr. Akiyama Yoshihiro, the preparatory survey was based on terms of reference between JICA and LAMATA carried out in August 2015.

Mbaka attacks Buhari, says Nigerians may not vote for him in 2019

Enugu Catholic priest, and Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari that Nigerians will not vote for him in 2019 if he does not address the high level of hunger and suffering  in the country.
Mbaka has been one of Buhari’s most vocal supporters since he asked Nigerians to reject the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party during the 2015 presidential pol and predicted Buhari’s victory.
But, in a surprising turn of events, Mbaka attacked Buhari in a recent message, details of which were obtained by journalists on Tuesday night.
In the message, Mbaka noted that there was too much suffering in the country, and faulted the President for not appointing the right people.
He also accused the President of listening to the wrong advice.
The message partly read, “The issue is that Mbaka is speaking as the Spirit leads him – there is hunger everywhere.  My job is to tell leaders the truth, the landlords are crying, the tenants are lamenting, sellers are crying, buyers are lamenting – there is hunger on the streets.
“I can’t keep quiet when things are going wrong.
“I am telling the President to look around him and know those who are advising him rightly and those who are telling him that there is no trouble.
“The President should know that there is trouble – if things continue like this, in the next election, nobody will vote for him.
“Whether they like it or not, I am speaking the raw truth.
“If the President should have somebody like me and he cannot be talking with me, then there is a problem.
“There is a problem somewhere; somebody who can advise you without asking for anything and he is representing the poor masses in the country and he won’t tell you lies.
“He will praise you when you are doing well and when you are not doing well, he will look at you in the face and tell you.”
Continuing, he said, “I don’t need the President; I need God, I need the Holy Spirit, I need Jesus; there is suffering everywhere, people are suffering.
“To feed is now a problem, and an hungry man is an angry man.
“Hunger and anger will lead to danger.
“So, let him know whether he can do away with some advisers around him and bring in the people who are experts in economic revamp.
“There are people who are experts in that; let them begin to empower people, people are not empowered, they are still walking around in vicious circles, planning and planning and planning.”
Mbaka said there were  no spaces left in mortuaries across the country.
“Hunger is everywhere, many neighbours don’t eat again, many are being attacked by hunger, hunger is becoming a normal thing and there are people responsible for this.
“Mortuary and ambulance business is now thriving because many cannot afford drugs.
“In today’s Nigeria, many are becoming hawkers, who will buy from you, with what?
“Everyday, more pipelines  are being blown, the Avengers are at work and up till now, there is no solution.
“You know when certain things begin to happen, you begin to ask some questions, somebody like me will begin to ask – when will this end?
“If it continues in the next three months, there will be no money to pay salaries – the vicious effect is disastrous and when salaries cannot be paid, teachers will come home, students will stop going to school, there will be more kidnappings, more hooliganism, more armed robbery, more prostitution, immorality will be on the increase.”
He urged Buhari to sit up and stop going after the leadership of the Senate.
Mbaka equally bemoaned the continuous depreciation in the value of the naira.
“So, the President should sit up – there is a red light blinking on the country.
“The issue of Saraki and Ekweremadu, nobody wants to listen to such stories any more, whether Saraki is the President of the Senate or Ekweremadu is not this or that, the countrymen are tired of such stories.
“We need economic experts, gurus, sages that are sincere, who can come in and think about our economic revamp and judicial reformation.”

Daddy Adeboye's position on marriage generate controversies

The ongoing annual convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, on Tuesday, received enormous publicity. The publicity, however, came in a controversial manner.
The General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, in a message on marriage, stirred a widespread debate on social media, with thousands taking to the Internet to protest or support his positions on the categories of people Christians should not marry.
Adeboye, who is fondly called Daddy G.O. by members of his church, advised a congregation of bachelors and spinsters at the convention to avoid marrying certain individuals in order to enjoy their marriages.
Videos of the teachings, which were uploaded on different social media sites, received huge ‘share’.
The pastor urged bachelors to shun ladies who could not pray “non-stop” for at least an hour. He also advised them against marrying “lazy” women as well as those who could not cook.
The cooking aspect particularly caught the attention of feminists. They protested the pastor’s remark, saying they were not supposed to be consigned to kitchens just because they were women.
Adeboye also warned ladies against accepting marriage proposals by “jobless” bachelors. He said those who could not earn incomes should not marry.
A social media activist, Asuquo Ulo, said the teachings were part of unacceptable thinking that characterised the age.
The tweeter disagreed with the cleric’s position, saying “marriage is really beyond jobs, cooking and prayers”.
As far as Chinye Onwordi, a Twitter user, is concerned, Adeboye’s advice had solved a persisting puzzle on the social media.
“Whether Nigerian ladies agree to cook when they marry or not, Adeboye has spoken the truth nobody should shy away from,” he tweeted.
One Ahmed Isah also wrote, “Adeboye, we thank you for ending this long debate. You spoke from a spiritual realm, not as a mere mortal.”
As of Tuesday evening, many sites had unveiled online polls with a view to assessing the acceptability of Adeboye’s marriage ‘prescriptions’.
In one of the videos, Adeboye advised, “Marry a prayer warrior! Don’t marry any girl who cannot pray for one hour non-stop. Don’t marry a girl who is lazy! If she is lazy when she is single, what will happen if she is married?”
In another one, he warned, “Don’t marry a man who has no job. Before God gave Adam Eve, he gave him a job. He said, ‘This is the garden, keep it.’ So when anybody comes to you and say, ‘Sister, thus saith the Lord, you are going to be the star in my firmament,’ ask him — ‘What is your job?’
“If he tells you he is a contractor, ask him to show you evidence of all the contracts he has done because the contract he is talking about is you. He wants to live off you.
“Don’t be a fool. If he hasn’t got a steady income, don’t marry him. A man is to provide for the house and not the other way round. If he has no income, he should not marry. Those who do not work should not eat. And if they can’t eat, they can’t even marry.”
Adeboye trended widely on social media platforms as the issues he raised were scrutinised by his fans and foes. The videos became the toast of members of the online community.
Adeboye’s popularity rating, by online metrics, soared. He also enjoyed a huge Google search, as bloggers dissected thousands of comments for catchy headlines for their posts.

How to track lost cell phones

A reader of The PUNCH, Bayo, sent an SMS that he needed to track and recover a smartphone he lost in January.
According to him, the phone is a very expensive Huawei Ascend P7 and he is ready to pay for information that could lead to its recovery.
A lot of people are like Bayo; their phones get snatched from their hands while they are making a call or taken out of their pockets. But according to http://www.ehow.com, to assist people in finding a lost device, both Google and Apple have included ways to track a missing phone in their respective operating systems.
The features are in-built but we have researched on procedures to set up, access them and use them to track your lost devices.

Apple’s solution is called Find My iPhone. This same service is capable of tracking any and all of your iOS devices (as well as any Mac associated with your Apple ID). To enable it on your iPhone, follow the steps below:Finding a lost iPhone
Launch the Settings app on your iPhone
Scroll down and tap on “iCloud.”
Near the bottom of the list, find and select “Find My iPhone.”
Slide the switch next to Find My iPhone to the On position.
While you’re there, you can equally turn on Send Last Location.
With Find My iPhone enabled, you can track a lost or stolen device through the Find My iPhone app on another iOS device or by visiting iCloud.com and signing in to your iCloud account. When tracking a device from either the app or iCloud website, you can lock it with a new passcode, track where the device currently is as well as where it has been, and as a last resort, you can fully erase all contents of the device.
Note that your iPhone will need to be turned on and connected to the Internet in order for the service to work. So, if a would-be thief picks up your device and immediately turns it off, you’re out of luck until it’s turned back on and able to connect to a network. If Send Last Location is enabled, your iPhone will report its last known location as the battery gets low. This won’t help you pinpoint the exact spot of the device if it’s been moved after the battery dies, but it will provide you with a good starting point to begin tracking your device.
In order to disable Find My iPhone on a device, Apple requires the user to approve the change with his or her Apple ID password. In other words, should a thief pick up your device they will be unable to disable Find My iPhone altogether unless they also know your password.
Finding a lost Android phone
Google’s Android Device Manager works more or less the same way as Apple’s Find My iPhone. Instead of having the service pre-installed, however, you will need to download the app from the Play Store and set it up in order to use it. Here’s how:
Search the Play Store for “Android Device Manager.”
Install the app and then sign in with your Google account.
Be sure to leave the checkbox “Never Ask Me Again” unchecked. If you leave that box checked, anyone with access to your device will have the ability to disable the feature or track your other devices.
You can also use another Android device to track your phone using the app, or visit Google’s Android Device Manager Website. You’ll need to log into the site using the same Google account you used to sign into the app on your phone.
Using the app, you can play a sound on the device, lock it, or completely erase it. As with the iPhone, if the device is powered off, you will be unable to track it until it’s turned back on and connected to a network.
