Statistics show employment decreased across all sectors, with the exceptions of community services.
JOHANNESBURG - It has emerged that 15,000 jobs were lost in the formal sector in the first quarter of this year.
Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has released its quarterly statistics which show employment decreased across all sectors, with the exceptions of community services, electricity and construction.
Statistician-General Pali Lehohla says the mining sector has seen a significant number of job losses, with 4,000 job losses so far this year.
“With relation to earning earnings lost, it’s R22 billion. The first quarter numbers in retail are usually cyclical with numbers declining in retail, but when they decline in manufacturing, it is a serious loss of jobs.”
Stats SA says the majority of young people in the country are unemployed, with around five million unable to find jobs.
Lehohla says the majority of jobless people are black.
“If you look at the unemployment of those who are graduates, for blacks it is nine percent; for whites it’s two percent and for Indians it’s is about six percent. Certainly, 39 percent [of unemployed people] is largely skilled.”
Last week, Stats SA unveiled its community survey for 2016 and noted an increase in the country’s population, with the majority living in the Gauteng province.
The data was collected from 1.3 million households, across all South African communities, and provided statistics on population, health, migration among other themes.
The survey revealed that the country’s population increased to 55.7 million people since 2011.
The survey also noted an improvement in the number of households with access to piped water.
