This year’s Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture will be dedicated to the Mamelodi families.
JOHANNESBURG - The University of Pretoria says the late former president would be heartbroken to see the levels of poverty, racial tension and economic problems facing South Africa today.
Advisor to the vice chancellor, Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, was speaking at the Nelson Mandela Foundation ahead of the annual lecture on Sunday.
Maluleke says although Nelson Mandela would be sad about the social and economic ills facing the country, he would be pleased that South Africa still has a strong judicial system.
“I think he would be really encouraged to see the work that some Chapter 9 institutions such as the Public Protector are doing in the country.”
The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Sello Hatang says the lecture is being dedicated to Mamelodi families who lost loved ones during apartheid.
“We hope to honour them with the lecture and go back to the basics of saying how do we live together in a society that’s been ravaged by pain.”
Hatang says they expect 3,000 people to attend Sunday’s lecture.
