Budding Composer Samuel Yawson, a second year student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has released his maiden highlife choral piece for this year, dedicating it to the writer of this Choral page, Mr. Alfred Kwesi Adams.
Titled ‘He is the King’, the composer cum singer and keyboardist says he is very happy to have released his first-ever highlife chorale piece, after years of compositions.
Samuel Yawson, 23, has over 70 choral compositions to his credit, and is noted for his prowess in solo and opera singing works.
Yawson, a Catholic by faith, told this chorale page, which comes out this and every Friday to promote choral music, that “A young composer as I am, my aim is to be creative with my writing, and also to make impact with my songs, because most of my songs come as divine inspiration. I usually get this inspiration to write or compose anytime I relax in my comfort zone after a hard day’s work, or when I’m free.”
The words of ‘He is King’ go like this…
‘We will sing and praise the Lord and magnify his name,
We will shout for the Lord our God is king
He’s the king O my soul bless his holy name
Give him praise; give him thanks, for the Lord is King.’
Samuel Yawson, a former Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) Choir Master, says the piece was also arranged, based on a popular Ghanaian praise song – oyeohenm agyenkwa ye ohen, momma yen som no Onyame ye Ohen.
“It is one of my first highlife arrangements, because ever since I started writing, I never wrote or arranged any highlife piece until just recently that I had the inspiration to write them. This particular song talks about the majesty of our king, and also his goodness, especially, in my life and that of my friends.
“I dedicated this song my brother, Mr. Alfred Kwesi Adams, for being my very good brother, and for all his good thoughts. Even as I was writing this song, I had a feeling that God was going to show him his goodness.” The piece has since hit the choral market.
