Stanley Dlamini, who witnessed the tornado in Tembisa, thanked God for escaping with his life.
JOHANNESBURG - As officials work to prevent a secondary collapse at the Phumulani Mall, which was hit by a tornado, a Tembisa local whose car was damaged by the natural disaster says he is just happy he wasn’t hurt.
Stanley Dlamini says he is still in shock after witnessing the tornado tear through the mall where he was preparing to do some shopping.
Several people have been treated for injuries and disaster management officials are on the scene to assist those who have been affected by the collapse.
Dlamini says he thought he was going to die when he witnessed this afternoon’s tornado.
“The tornado was very strong, I thought I was going to die.”
He says many of the roof sheets that flew off the mall landed on his car, causing serious damage.
With many people having suffered injuries in the disaster Dlamini says he is lucky to be unharmed.
Officials are now trying to find a way of preventing further structural damage overnight.
Emergency teams are on standby at the mall this evening as disaster management officials work to stabilise what's left of the building.
The tornado also destroyed a fence at the Tembisa Tertiary Hospital, carports and about 20 vehicles belonging to staff members.
Three ambulances were also damaged.
