The ministry of industry says the move will promote local production but Zimbabweans are not convinced.
JOHANNESBURG – Hair extensions from South Africa are one of the many things the authorities in Zimbabwe are trying to cut down on retailers importing, and that has people talking.
The ministry of industry says the move will promote local production, but locals are not convinced.
The long list of products Zimbabwean retailers can no longer bring in freely from South Africa includes jam and peanut butter.
But it’s the move to cut down on imports of hair extensions that’s really got people talking.
Some on Twitter are joking that this will really anger Zimbabwean women and could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Though the country’s understood to have at least one firm producing hair extensions, many of those found in stores, tuckshops, hairdressers and supermarkets are imported.
There’s also disbelief over the moves to limit body lotion imports, while some are pointing out that the cash-strapped authorities are going to lose money on import duty.
