Puerto Rican police on Thursday arrested about 120 people, including the son of a mayor and two employees of the San Juan city government, for illegal drug and weapons sales in different parts of the island.
The head of the Puerto Rico Police's drug and weapons division, Lt. Col. Jose Juan Garcia, said at a press conference that the broad operation focused on the cities of San Juan, Fajardo, Caguas, Aibonito, Mayagüez, Rio Grande, Ponce and Guayama.
Garcia said that the traffickers' earnings obtained on the black market from marijuana sales totaled $504,000, while cocaine sales brought in $600,000 and heroin sales $1 million.
One of the people arrested, Angelo Cruz Mendez, 31, was identified as the son of Ceiba Mayor Angelo Cruz Ramos. Cruz Mendez was taken into custody near Ceiba after making a pot sale to an undercover police officer.
In a radio interview, Cruz Ramos said that in an attempt to deal with his son's drug addiction he had turned to Christian centers, detoxification programs and even had sent him to the United States for treatment.
In addition, police arrested an employee of the San Juan municipal recycling facility identified as Raymond Plaza De Jesus while in possession of $33,000 in cash and 166 doses of heroin.
Police also arrested the city employee's wife, who works part time at the capital City Hall.
Meanwhile, in the town of Rio Grande, police arrested Miguel Cruz Rodriguez, the owner of a food sales business, for selling cocaine and marijuana.
