Thoko Didiza says that the African National Congress was not taken by surprise by the election results.
JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC)’s Tshwane mayoral candidate Thoko Didiza says the party is going back to the drawing board after its support dipped below 50 percent in the capital, but she insists her appointment which was challenged by supporters had nothing to do with this.
Didiza was speaking on the sidelines of the Independent Electoral Commission’s official announcement of results in Pretoria at the weekend.
The ANC in Tshwane secured 41.22% of the vote, making the Democratic Alliance (DA) the biggest party in the region with 43.11%.
But Didiza says the elections were highly contested and that her party was not taken by surprise.
"It was no surprise that we ended up with the results that we did, all of us with no one going beyond 45% mark."
She says protests against her appointment as mayoral candidate in the city didn’t have a bearing on the results.
She added that the party will analyse the results and go back to its roots to win back the support.
Meanwhile, political analyst Somadoda Fikeni says this election was a severe punishment for the ANC.
The governing party has seen its worst performance since the dawn of democracy.
Fikeni says the ANC should have seen this coming.
"Don’t spend too much time disproportionately defending your leader, focus on your programme because they seem to have spent 80-to-90% trying to defend president Zuma. They even forgot what the manifesto was."
