Solly Msimanga says the talks around coalitions in Tshwane may extend much further.
JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Tshwane mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga has hinted that negotiations around a coalition to govern the capital may actually include talks around a national agreement that would create governments in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni as well.
The results of last week’s local polls have left the DA with the largest percentage of votes in Tshwane, but not enough to govern alone, while the DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) together have more votes than the African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg.
The DA has already said that coalition talks are underway.
Msimanga says the talks around the city he could soon lead may not just revolve around Tshwane itself.
“From the indications it may be that the negotiations are not only around the city of Tshwane but around a number of municipalities as well. You’ll remember Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Rustenburg are part of that.”
He also says he has removed himself from these negotiations because he is a factor in what could happen.
There are also claims that the EFF is in communication with the ANC, but that EFF leader Julius Malema is demanding President Jacob Zuma step down before allowing them to proceed.
