Uyo – The Joint Task Force (JTF) comprising the military, mobile policemen, anti-bomb squad and others, on Tuesday averted militants’ attack on Akwa Ibom Government House, Uyo.
The JTF dispersed a group of militants who gathered around the Governor’s Office along Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, in furtherance of their regular protest against their non-inclusion in the amnesty programme of the Federal Government.
The protest by the militants, which began in the morning, led to the cordoning off of all the adjourning streets near the Governor’s Office by security operatives who used tear gas to disperse the protesting militants as they insisted on seeing Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Independent gathered that while the policemen were pacifying the militants who were over 100 in number to leave the vicinity, the militants were threatening violence, insisting on having an immediate audience with the governor, since past attempts to resolve the issue had not yielded fruit.
Some in the group insisted that their counterparts from other states have been paid, and it was only in Akwa Ibom that their demands had met a brick wall.
“We have made our demands known over the years, we have been coming here repeatedly, but there has been no positive response from the state government,” one of the militants was quoted as saying.
It was gathered that after all attempts by the security operatives to pacify the militants failed, a volley of tear gas canisters was fired, which sent the militants running from the Governor’s Office.
